cold-shut
Incomplete metal fusion
A cold-shut is a defect in metal casting or forging where two streams of molten metal meet but fail to fuse completely, leaving a visible seam or weak spot.
The metal cooled too quickly before proper bonding could occur.
In welding, a cold-shut is an incomplete fusion at the joint.
The term also applies to a type of metal link or fastener that can be closed without heating.
