coeliac disease
Wheat protein allergy
Coeliac disease is an autoimmune disorder in which eating gluten—a protein in wheat, barley, and rye—triggers damage to the small intestine.
The immune system attacks the intestinal lining, impairing nutrient absorption and causing symptoms ranging from digestive distress to fatigue and weight loss.
Treatment requires a strict gluten-free diet.
Also spelled celiac disease, especially in American English.
