cloven foot
Divided animal foot
A cloven foot is a hoof divided into two toes, as in cattle, sheep, goats, and pigs.
The feature distinguishes these animals from horses and donkeys, whose hooves are solid.
In Christian iconography, the devil is depicted with cloven feet, making the phrase suggest something sinister or diabolical: His charm couldn't hide the cloven foot beneath.
