split hoof

Pig's foot type

A split hoof is a hoof divided into two toes, as found on cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, and deer.

The term appears most often in religious contexts—Leviticus declares animals with split hooves that also chew cud to be clean for eating.

Pigs have split hooves but don't chew cud, hence their prohibition in Jewish and Islamic dietary law.
