A classical dancer is a performer trained in one of the formal, codified dance traditions—most often ballet in Western contexts, but also classical Indian forms like Bharatanatyam or Kathak, or other traditional styles with established techniques and vocabularies.
The term distinguishes these dancers from those in modern, contemporary, or vernacular styles: She trained as a classical dancer before moving into contemporary work.
