city directory
Local residence listing
A city directory is a reference book listing residents and businesses of a city, typically organized alphabetically by name and sometimes by street address.
Before telephone books and internet searches, city directories served as the primary way to locate people and businesses: The 1890 city directory shows my great-grandfather's occupation as blacksmith.
Genealogists and historians still consult them for research.
