circus clown
Painted tent performer
A circus clown is a performer in a circus who wears exaggerated makeup, colorful costumes, and oversized shoes to entertain audiences with physical comedy, pratfalls, and sight gags.
The figure is so culturally embedded that circus clown often appears figuratively for anyone behaving foolishly or making a spectacle of themselves: Stop acting like a circus clown and take this seriously.
