church wardens
Congregation's lay administrators
Church wardens are lay officials elected or appointed to manage the secular affairs of a parish church—maintaining the building, handling finances, and representing the congregation to church authorities.
The term also refers to a style of long-stemmed clay tobacco pipe, supposedly favored by such officials during their meetings: He packed his churchwarden and settled into the armchair.
