chloramines

Water treatment compounds

Chloramines are chemical compounds formed when chlorine combines with ammonia or organic nitrogen.

Water treatment facilities use chloramines as disinfectants because they last longer in pipes than chlorine alone.

They can also form unintentionally when chlorine bleach mixes with ammonia-containing cleaners, producing toxic fumes: Never mix bleach with ammonia—the chloramines can be dangerous.
