caution period
Yellow flag time
A caution period is a temporary slowdown in auto racing when an incident on the track—a crash, debris, or hazardous conditions—requires the field to reduce speed.
Cars must follow the pace car and cannot pass until racing resumes.
Three caution periods extended the race by twenty laps.
Also called a yellow flag period.
