cathartic experience

Purging inner turmoil

A cathartic experience is one that releases pent-up emotions, leaving you feeling purged or relieved.

The term comes from catharsis, originally Aristotle's idea that tragedy cleanses the audience through pity and fear.

A good cry, an intense workout, or finally telling someone off can all be cathartic: Screaming into a pillow was surprisingly cathartic.

The phrase often describes confronting something difficult that unexpectedly brings peace.
