capitation

Head count payment

Capitation is a payment system where a fixed amount is paid per person for a set period, regardless of services rendered.

In healthcare, a provider receives a set fee per enrolled patient rather than billing for each visit or procedure: Under capitation, the clinic gets $50 per member per month.

The term comes from the Latin for head—payment by the head count.
