cam shaft
Lobe-studded engine rod
A camshaft is a rotating shaft with projecting lobes (cams) that convert rotational motion into reciprocating motion.
In internal combustion engines, the camshaft opens and closes valves in precise sequence with the pistons: The mechanic replaced the worn camshaft.
Overhead cam engines position the camshaft above the cylinders; pushrod engines place it lower in the block.
