cam belt
Engine synchronization band
A cam belt is a toothed rubber belt that synchronizes the rotation of an engine's crankshaft and camshaft, ensuring valves open and close at the correct times.
Also called a timing belt.
Cam belts require periodic replacement; if one snaps, the engine can suffer catastrophic damage.
The mechanic recommended replacing the cam belt at 80,000 miles.
