cacao pods
Beans inside husks
Cacao pods are the large, ridged fruit of the cacao tree, containing the seeds from which chocolate and cocoa are made.
The pods grow directly from the trunk and branches, ripening to yellow, orange, or red.
Inside, cacao beans are embedded in sweet white pulp.
Workers split the cacao pods with machetes to harvest the beans.
