bull baiting
Dogs attacking bovine
Bull baiting was a blood sport in which dogs were set upon a tethered bull, attacking it while spectators wagered on the outcome.
The dogs, bred for this purpose, became the ancestors of modern bulldogs and pit bulls.
Popular in Britain from medieval times until banned in 1835, the practice was considered entertainment across social classes.
The old bull ring in the town square dates from when bull baiting drew crowds every market day.
