bubble teams
March Madness fringe
Bubble teams are sports teams on the edge of qualifying for playoffs or tournaments—they might make it or might not.
The term evokes a bubble that could pop either way.
Most common during selection periods for tournaments like March Madness, where analysts debate which teams will receive invitations: Three bubble teams are sweating out Selection Sunday.
