broken-wing display

Predator distraction act

A broken-wing display is a behavior some birds perform to lure predators away from their nests.

The parent bird feigns injury, dragging a wing as if broken and fluttering along the ground, drawing the threat's attention while leading it away from vulnerable eggs or chicks.

Once the predator is at a safe distance, the bird flies off.

Killdeer are particularly known for this distraction display.
