bridging ligand

Links metal centers

A bridging ligand is a molecule or ion that connects two or more metal centers in a coordination compound, bonding to each simultaneously.

In chemical notation, bridging ligands are marked with the Greek letter mu (μ): μ-oxo indicates an oxygen atom bridging two metals.

Bridging ligands are fundamental to the structure of many metal clusters and catalysts.
