breakout session
Splinter group discussion
A breakout session is a smaller group meeting held during a larger conference or workshop.
Participants split off from the main assembly to discuss specific topics, work on exercises, or collaborate more intimately than the full group allows: After the keynote, we divided into breakout sessions by industry.
The term comes from the idea of breaking out of the larger gathering.
