breakout rooms
Small group spaces
Breakout rooms are smaller virtual spaces within a video conference where participants can have separate discussions before rejoining the main meeting.
The term comes from conference settings where groups "break out" into side rooms for focused work: We'll split into breakout rooms to brainstorm, then reconvene in fifteen minutes.
The feature became ubiquitous during the remote-work surge of the early 2020s.
