brake marks
Rubber on asphalt
Brake marks are the dark streaks left on pavement when a vehicle's tires skid during hard braking.
Investigators use them to reconstruct accidents—their length indicates speed, their pattern reveals whether brakes were applied suddenly or gradually: The brake marks showed he'd tried to stop.
