bolt-holes
Hidden emergency exits
Bolt-holes are places of escape or refuge—somewhere to retreat when things get difficult.
The term comes from holes that allow small animals to bolt (flee quickly) from predators.
A bolt-hole might be a country cottage, a quiet bar, or any hideaway: She kept a small apartment in Paris as a bolt-hole.
In British usage especially, the word suggests a private retreat from stress or responsibility.
