boggarts

Fear-manifesting creatures

Boggarts are mischievous household spirits in English folklore, particularly from Northern England.

They attach themselves to homes or families, causing milk to sour, objects to disappear, and doors to slam.

Unlike some spirits, boggarts supposedly follow families who try to escape them by moving.

The term appears in fantasy literature, sometimes with altered meanings: The boggart in the wardrobe turned into whatever you feared most.
