body-checking

Legal hockey contact

Body-checking is using your body to block or shove an opponent, especially in hockey and lacrosse.

It's a legal defensive move within certain rules—hitting too hard, too late, or from behind draws penalties.

The term extends to any deliberate physical obstruction: Security body-checked the fan who ran onto the field.
