blue-greens

Teals and aquas

Blue-greens are cyanobacteria, photosynthetic microorganisms once classified as blue-green algae.

They inhabit freshwater, marine, and terrestrial environments, and are among the oldest life forms on Earth, having produced much of the planet's early oxygen.

Despite their algae-like appearance, they are bacteria rather than plants.

In warm, nutrient-rich water, blue-greens can bloom rapidly and produce toxins harmful to wildlife and humans.
