blood donation ban
Barred from giving
A blood donation ban is a policy prohibiting certain groups from donating blood, typically based on perceived risk factors for transmissible diseases.
The most controversial have been bans on donations from men who have sex with men, implemented during the AIDS crisis and only partially relaxed decades later: The FDA finally lifted the blanket blood donation ban in 2023.
Such bans are defended as public health measures but criticized as discriminatory when they target identity rather than behavior.
