blank round
Ammunition without projectile
A blank round is a cartridge loaded with gunpowder but no projectile—it produces the flash and bang of live ammunition without firing a bullet.
Blank rounds are used for training, theatrical productions, starting pistols, and military salutes: The firing squad used blank rounds for the ceremony.
Also called simply a blank.
