blackcap
Gray warbler species
Blackcap most commonly refers to a small European warbler, the male of which has a distinctive black crown that gives the bird its name.
The term extends to other birds and animals with dark markings on their heads, including certain chickadees and raspberries with dark fruit.
In British English, blackcap has also referred historically to a judge's cap worn when passing a death sentence.
We spotted a blackcap singing in the hedgerow.
