black feminism

Race-conscious gender justice

Black feminism is an intellectual and political tradition addressing how race, gender, and class intersect to shape Black women's experiences.

It emerged from recognition that mainstream feminism often centered white women while civil rights movements often centered Black men, leaving Black women's specific concerns unaddressed.

Key concepts include intersectionality and the idea that liberation movements must account for multiple, overlapping forms of oppression: Black feminism insists you can't separate racism from sexism when analyzing Black women's lives.
