best supporting actor
Outstanding auxiliary role
Best supporting actor is an award category in film and television recognizing an actor in a secondary role—one who enhances the production without being its lead.
The designation appears in major ceremonies like the Academy Awards and Golden Globes: He won Best Supporting Actor for his role as the villain.
The line between lead and supporting can be contentious, with studios sometimes campaigning actors in whichever category seems most winnable.
