begs

Asks with desperation

Begs is the third-person singular form of beg, meaning to ask earnestly or humbly for something, often as charity: He begs for change on the corner.

When you beg someone to do something, you plead with them: She begged him to stay.

The phrase begs the question has two meanings that compete in usage: the older one refers to a logical fallacy of assuming what you're trying to prove; the newer, more common one simply means raises or invites the question: His absence begs the question of whether he's still committed.
