beer leagues
Amateur sports groups
Beer leagues are amateur recreational sports leagues, typically for adults, where competition takes a back seat to socializing.
The name suggests players are there more for post-game drinks than athletic glory.
Most common in hockey and softball: I play in a Thursday night beer league.
The quality of play varies widely, but the atmosphere is casual and forgiving of rusty skills.
