beat down

Relentless overhead glare

Beat down has two clusters of meaning.

The literal sense is to strike repeatedly until subdued or flattened: The sun beat down on us all afternoon, They beat down the door.

To beat someone down in negotiation is to force them to accept a lower price: I beat him down to fifty dollars.

As a noun, a beatdown is a severe physical assault or crushing defeat: They gave him a beatdown in the parking lot.
