barrel bomb
Crude aerial munition
A barrel bomb is an improvised explosive device made from a barrel or similar container filled with explosives, shrapnel, and sometimes incendiary materials or chemicals.
Dropped from helicopters or aircraft, barrel bombs are cheap to produce but highly destructive and indiscriminate.
They became notorious during the Syrian Civil War, where government forces used them against civilian areas: The hospital was destroyed by a barrel bomb.
