baker's dozen
Dozen plus one
A baker's dozen is thirteen—one more than a standard dozen.
The term comes from the old practice of bakers adding an extra item to avoid accusations of shortchanging customers.
Now it refers to any group of thirteen: We ordered a baker's dozen of bagels.
