backcountry skiers
Off-piste snow travelers
Backcountry skiers are those who ski in remote, ungroomed terrain away from developed ski resorts—typically reaching their runs by hiking, climbing, or helicopter rather than chairlift.
The term encompasses both downhill skiing and ski touring in wilderness areas.
Backcountry skiing appeals to those seeking untouched powder and solitude but requires avalanche awareness and self-reliance: Backcountry skiers carry beacons, probes, and shovels.
