backcountry skier
Off-piste snow traveler
A backcountry skier travels through wilderness terrain on skis, typically beyond the boundaries of maintained ski resorts.
Unlike resort skiing, backcountry skiing requires navigating ungroomed snow, often earning turns by hiking or skinning uphill before descending.
The activity demands avalanche awareness and self-reliance: Backcountry skiers carry beacons, probes, and shovels.
