backburns
Firefighting preventive burns
Backburns are controlled fires set by firefighters to consume fuel in the path of an advancing wildfire, creating a burned barrier the main fire cannot cross.
The technique fights fire with fire—deliberately burning vegetation before the wildfire arrives.
As a verb, to backburn is to set such a fire: Crews backburned through the night to protect the ridge.
