back fire
Plan goes wrong
A backfire is an explosion in an engine's intake or exhaust system, or the intentional burning of an area to deprive an advancing fire of fuel.
To backfire is to produce such an explosion, or more commonly, for a plan to have the opposite of its intended effect: The smear campaign backfired spectacularly.
Usually one word.
