back board

Behind the hoop

A back board is a board forming or placed at the back of something.

In basketball, the backboard is the flat vertical surface to which the hoop is attached; shots that bounce off it are off the glass.

In medicine, a backboard is the rigid flat surface used to immobilize patients with potential spinal injuries during transport.

Usually spelled as one word: backboard.
