autotransfusion

Recirculating one's blood

Autotransfusion is a medical procedure in which a patient receives their own blood rather than donor blood.

Blood may be collected before surgery and stored, or recovered during an operation and reinfused.

The technique eliminates risks of transfusion reactions and bloodborne disease transmission: The surgical team used autotransfusion to minimize the need for banked blood.
