atrophic gastritis
Chronic stomach lining erosion
Atrophic gastritis is a chronic condition in which the stomach lining thins and loses its acid-producing cells over time.
It develops gradually, often from long-term infection with H. pylori bacteria or from autoimmune disorders where the body attacks its own stomach tissue.
The condition can impair nutrient absorption, particularly vitamin B12 and iron, and increases the risk of stomach cancer.
Doctors typically diagnose it through endoscopy and biopsy.
