Competitive physical contests
Athletic events are organized competitions in sports or physical activities—track and field meets, swimming championships, gymnastics competitions.
The term covers both the occasions themselves and the specific contests within them: The 100-meter dash is the marquee athletic event at most track meets.
Athletic events range from local school competitions to the Olympics.
