artisan guilds

Medieval trade organizations

Artisan guilds were medieval associations of craftspeople in the same trade—weavers, blacksmiths, goldsmiths, bakers.

They regulated training, quality standards, and prices while protecting members from outside competition.

A craftsman progressed from apprentice to journeyman to master.

The term now describes any organized group of skilled makers: The artisan guilds of Renaissance Florence produced extraordinary work.
