arthouses
Non-mainstream movie theaters
Arthouses are cinemas that specialize in independent, foreign, or experimental films rather than mainstream commercial releases.
The term also applies attributively to the films themselves: an arthouse film, an arthouse aesthetic.
Such venues and their programming tend toward the critically acclaimed, the challenging, or the obscure—what won't play at the multiplex.
