art houses
Non-mainstream film venues
Art houses are cinemas that specialize in independent, foreign, or experimental films rather than mainstream commercial releases.
The term evokes intimate venues with discerning audiences: We caught the new Iranian film at the art house downtown.
As a modifier, art-house describes films with artistic ambitions over mass appeal: an art-house drama, art-house sensibilities.
