Small embedded software
Applets are small applications designed to perform a specific, limited function, typically running within a larger program rather than independently.
The term emerged with Java applets—miniature programs embedded in web pages that ran in browsers.
Though Java applets have largely disappeared, the word persists for lightweight, single-purpose software: The dashboard displays several applets for weather, stocks, and calendar.
