brilliantine
Vintage hair slick
Brilliantine is a perfumed oil or cream used to make hair glossy and hold it in place.
Popular from the late 19th century through the mid-20th, it gave men's hair the slicked-back shine seen in old photographs: His hair gleamed with brilliantine.
The term now sounds dated, largely replaced by gel and pomade.
