anticatalysts
Chemical process slowdowns
Anticatalysts are substances that slow or prevent chemical reactions, the opposite of catalysts.
In chemistry, they work by interfering with catalytic processes or inhibiting reaction pathways.
The term extends figuratively to anything that impedes progress or prevents change from happening: His pessimism acted as an anticatalyst, killing every new initiative before it could gain momentum.
